Laser Racing

What is the Laser Racing Program?

The Laser Beginner Racing class is for children ages 13 to 18 who are too big or too old to sail the Optimist and wish to pursue single-handed sailing, and for those youth sailors who have basic sailing experience. The Laser is an Olympic Class boat; men sail the Laser Standard and women sail the Laser Radial at the Olympics and allows sailors sailing from beginner through the highest levels of sailing. Lasers are one of the fastest growing one-design classes in North America and the primary single-handed boat used in youth sailing events The Laser can be rigged with three different sail plans, providing great versatility across a wide range of skipper sizes. Lasers are best suited to sailors 13 years of age or older, over 100 pounds, and focused on racing. The Laser Beginner Racing class focuses on refining boat control, and boat handling skills. Students learn advanced sailing skills such as roll tacks and roll gybes, and they are introduced to racing starts and race courses.

The Laser Racing class is for children ages 14 to 18 and builds on the Laser Beginner Racing Class (but taking the Laser Beginner Racing class is not required) to improve boat handling skills and apply these to a racing environment. Sailors work on boat control, developing boat speed, maneuvering, and sailing around a course. Sailors learn how to start, how to round race marks and how to finish a race. On-shore chalk talks are used to prepare for on-the-water drills, as well as learning the racing rules, and developing racing strategies. Sailors are encouraged to participate in area regattas. Here the sailors work on sail trim, boat speed, tactics, rules, and strategy under actual racing conditions. Parental support at regattas is mandatory.

It is highly recommended that students have their own Laser with a size appropriate rig. Old Cove YC has a dozen Lasers with different rigs which are made available to Junior Sailors on a first-registration basis. This is not a charter and students are not guaranteed a specific boat from class to class, nor are they permitted to use an OCYC boat outside of their lessons, except for OCYC JS sanctioned regattas and OCYC arranged private lessons. If your child does not have his or her own boat, choose the class registration “with club boat”. Only if your child has its own Laser can you choose the option “with own boat”.
